19 April - 3-4 loss against John Fisher
A disappointing performance to end the season, everything that we did well against Economicals last week we did badly here. There was a lack of organisation and communication against a team that were there for the taking, but seemed to want it more. Dan Irving aside, we would probably all admit that we were under-par. Overall, however, 27 points is a good achievement, and if we can start beating the teams at the bottom, rather than just raising our game for the big matches then we can push on from mid-table next season.
5 April - 2-0 win vs Economicals
Playing the second placed team after four weeks without a game it was imperative that we started well, which for the first time this season we duly did. We did not allow them to settle on the ball and really got in their faces. We deserved to take the lead when Tom Stevens marauded down the right and drove the ball into the bottom left corner from 25 yards. We were soon forced into a change when Matt "Hollywood" Huxley suffered a sickening gash to then head which many feared would end his lucrative contract modelling for Matalan. As he left the field, Huxley (who was later given 12 stitches and a battered sausage and chips) told goalkeeper Chris Barne$ that he would really like to be captain next season (although obviously now would deny this). Fortunately Barne$ was able to record these comments on a notebook which he keeps in goal in case opposition strikers reveal price sensitive information to him at set-pieces. At half-time, and with Tugboat dropping anchor in the centre of defence in place of Huxley, the team resolved to go out and win the game in honour of their future captain. Despite weathering a meteorological and metaphorical storm during the second half, Fitz remained 1-0 up and when the oppo keeper ventured up for a corner, an excellent clearance from Big Jim Innes found its way to Tom Stevens after Dan Irving fell over. Stevens, with an open goal but for a defender on the edge of the box, chipped in from the halfway line to send the home crowd (of Ciaran, Dans Bird and her mate) wild. A two-nil win left Fitz on 27 points in Senior Three south, a club record. With one game remaining, the 30 point target is well within reach. Overall it was a great performance from everyone against a strong side. Excellent performances from Dan Irving and Joe Huxley up front who both ran tirelessly, while Big Jim Innes who had arrived looking like Jimmy Ormond, recovered well from a night in Geoff Morgans bed to put in a manful display at the back. MOTM ought to go to Tom Stevens who put recent criticism of his throw-ins behind him and registered two goals which should push the Ed McBride toe-punt into third place for goal of the season.
8 March - 1-1 draw vs Kings OB
Another slow start saw Fitz fall behind from a set piece (how many times!!). But after this we picked up and Dan Irving soon drew us level with a neat turn and shot in the box. The goal reminded me very much of watching Gary Linekar when I was young (around 1990) in that it seemed instinctive and occurred in the 6 yard box after a sustained period of goal hanging from Irving. Fitz had further chances but unfortunately these all fell to Joe Huxleys feet rather than his head. Some of the efforts reminded me of Geoff Thomas against France in 1992. Fitz rang the changes at half time, with captain Bewley selflessly sacrificing himself despite the protestations of Chris Barne$. The second half was played at a good tempo and saw one outstanding move down the left lead to a Chris Archer effort being brilliantly saved by their keeper. This, it has to be said, reminded me of Gordon Banks in 1970. Despite some sustained pressure they defended well and we were forced to settle for a draw. Good performances all round, but especially from Chesh, Innes, Chris Archer on debut and Dan Irvings girlfriend Sally on the touchline. Game v Economicals to be designated WAGS day, reminiscent of Baden Baden in the 2006 World Cup.
23 February - 0-4 loss to Old Hamptonians
Fitz fielded an experimental line-up in a game that was always going to be tough against a promotion chasing side. Despite having most of the possession, Fitz went one down through a great volley from their left midfielder. Good chances to draw level were not taken, and Fitz went in 2 down at half time after another exceptional strike. The oppo got behind the ball in the second half and allowed Fitz to play, but we were undone by sloppiness at the back, followed by one of the most questionable pieces of refereeing that any of us had ever witnessed. 4-0 was not a fair result given our possession, however they clearly had a better cutting edge and did deserve to win. Special mention to Rory for playing in net and putting in a performance which has seen Barnes relegated to 3rd choice keeper/goalkeeping coach, and Dan Muirden for putting in a great performance for an old timer. Highlights of the day included i) the walk to the ground where a middle aged woman spent 10 minutes unburdening her mental issues onto ed the shrink mcbride; and ii) afterwards in a pub by the station when we were able to debate the merits of obstacle races at school sports days within the context of government education policy with a gentleman of dubious persuasion.
